Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time managing and coaching Super Sellers and Super Managers. Today in my consulting business I spend a lot of time with Super Business Owners and other senior level executives, and there are a lot of similarities between the two. Their businesses have grown because of their hands on approach. They excel at doing deals and running the business. The question is, if it is all about you, how do you grow?

You’re already working as hard as you can, so when the economy slows down there’s no extra time to make up for lost deals. If you decide the economy has improved and it’s time to grow, you’re still too busy and don’t have the time to invest in growth. Finally, if you look into the future and decide you want to work less, transition out of the business or quit, who is going to keep the revenue coming in? This is a dilemma that plays out in small, medium and large businesses all across the country. The question is: how do you make the change…?

The answer is you need to build a plan to go from a Me organization to a We organization. You need to start training, developing and coaching people in your organization to do what you’ve been doing for years. You need to assess who you have on your staff right now that can fill those shoes. If you don’t currently have anyone, then you need to find that right person or persons. Most owners want their companies to run long after they are not heavily involved. It’s going to take an investment of time and a shift in your business philosophy to make that happen. Building a transition strategy is really the only way.
